Dead President v. Reelected One

"If its cold outside, just put on a heavier coat". When he was telling Romanians that, was Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Dead President, powerful? He was, is the belief of our current Reelected President, who himself is a very powerful leader when he tells us to: "Come on, let's stop making such a fuss about the fact that doctors are emigrating. It's our right to go wherever is best for us". That's correct - when our Dear Leader has a health issue more serious than having stuck a cotton swab too far up his ear canal, he flies to Vienna, like he did a couple of years back; he's entitled to. So is his family. But the Romanian commoner, when ill, has every right to go six feet under, where for many of them it's probably not that much worse than it is right here. Romanian doctors are emigrating, the number of deaths go up, which means all those layoffs and pension cuts will be taken care of naturally. Now that's some sound economic judgment on behalf of President. There's just one thing I don't get: why should there still be Medical Schools in Romanian state education? Since we can't pay the doctors anyway, as our President is informing us, why should we even be making doctors? We don't have to do everything ourselves. What, does Romania manufacture computers? It doesn't, and it's getting along quite fine. But when I think about it better, I get all enlightened and such: we're making doctors for export. Just like Romania was exporting food massively in the 1980s, and the population was left fending for itself.

There are other solutions, our President tells the disgruntled new teacher, unhappy that his salary is smaller than that of the janitorial staff. What other solutions? For doctors, the solution is to wear scrubs with deep pockets, unlike what one of my acquaintances wrongly did wearing scrubs with no pockets, and for teachers it's to give their students private lessons at home, after hours, for money, and show them what tax evasion's all about. I have one more solution, which I humbly suggest to our Dear Leader, especially since his highness says he used to have a salary lower than the Navrom cleaning lady (true, he didn't specify said cleaning lady's rank within the Securitate): that new teachers get salary raises and mop the floors and that cleaning ladies be demoted to keeping classes - I don't think they're going to strike.

If you ever thought that Prime Minister Boc is a powerful person, oh well, President Băsescu reveals that he really isn't. Desperate to beef up his public image, which has shrunk to sizes even smaller than his natural size, Mr. Boc was in a hurry to tell state employees of the possibility of raising salaries in 2011. For that, Emil Boc isn't just another liar, demagogue, etc., he is just "incapable of being strong", says Mr. Băsescu.

Obsessed by the power he exercises over people, Traian Băsescu substitutes power to ethical principles. It's not really necessary to be strong to tell the truth, you just have to be honest. When he tells doctors and teachers "things that upset", Mr. Băsescu isn't doing it because his honesty is so great that it's kicking him out of his house on Mihăileanu street (you know, the Bucharest house he bought from City Hall, while Mayor), he's doing it to prove to the people how strong he is, just how big his cojones are, and just how well he can ride, as Nicolae Ceauşescu used to say, haunted by fantasies of being an ancient Romanian Voivode on horseback.

For Traian Băsescu, all his relationships, whether they be with family, the government, the party, the people, or the cleaning lady, are a power balance. That is why he has no friends; he only has servants and enemies.
