The Romanian car market was ranked 17th in the European Union regarding the number of new car registrations in the first nine months of the year.

The local car market fell 7.8% in January-September, but picked up in September to register one of the highest increases in Europe.

The number of new car registrations in Romania dropped 7.8% in the first nine months of the year to 57,455 units, while in September it witnessed a 23% increase compared to the same interval last year to 8,435 units, according to data released Tuesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

In September, the local car market registered the fifth highest increase in the European Union, after Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Bulgaria (their car registrations, though, did not exceed 2,000 units in the analyzed period).

The number of new car registrations in EU fell 1.1% in the first nine months of the year to 10.122 million units, but increased 0.7% in September to 1.232 million.

The German car market, leader in Europe, registered a 10.8% increase between January and September to 2.4 million new car registrations.

Carmaker Dacia's market share in the European Union slightly decreased in the first nine months of the year to 1.8% from 1.9% in the same interval a year ago, after registrations of new cars produced by the company dropped 7% to 179,849 units from 193,354 units.

In September, the number of Dacia car registrations in EU increased 16% to 17,901 units from 15,431 units. The market share of Dacia, owned by French group Renault, surged to 1.5% from 1.3%.

Registrations of new cars manufactured by Renault dropped 9.2% in the first nine months of the year to 960,285 from 1.057 million units, while in September the French carmaker saw a 1.5% increase in the number of car registrations to 108,405 units from 106,736 units in the same interval in 2010.

BMW and Volkswagen saw the highest increases in the number of new car registrations in the EU in the first nine months of the year, of 10.6% and 7.9%, respectively. PSA Peugeot-Citroen registered a 7.7% drop and Ford a 4.8% decrease. Fiat saw a 12% decrease, Toyota a 8.9% drop, while Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) registered a 1.4% increase.
