Romania's leu retreated against the euro by midday Wednesday and the central bank's reference lost almost 0.2% on the day to 4.3565 units, the lowest rate in two weeks.

Against the US dollar, the leu's indicative fell 0.6% to 3.23 units, from 3.2116 units a day earlier.

The leu opened down at 4.353/4.357 per euro, from 4.3515/4.3545 per euro at Tuesday's closing. It further depreciated, pushed down by higher demand for euro, and hit an early low of 4.361 per euro.

At around 13:00 hours, the leu traded at 4.3565/4.359 to the euro.

On the money market, overnight rates rose to 6.8%-7.3% a year.
