O echipă de cercetători de la Universitatea Harvard din SUA susţine că bărbaţii care beau cafea prezintă un risc scăzut de a se îmbolnăvi de cancer de prostată.
Pentru a ajunge la acestă concluzie, oamenii de ştiinţă au monitorizat oe o perioadă de 20 de ani aproximativ 50.000 de bărbaţi. S-a demonstrat astfel că subiecţii care consumă cafea zilnic au avut cu 60 la sută mai puţine riscuri de a se îmbolnăvii de cancer de prostată. "Cafeaua are efect asupra modului în care organismul înmagazinează zahărul şi asupra homonilor sexuali, ambii factori legaţi de cancerul de prostată", spune cercetătoarea Kathryn Wilson, coordonator al studiului. Cercetătorii nu au putut încă arăta ce substanţă conţinută de cafea este responsabilă cu diminuarea riscului. Potrivit cotidianului "Daily Mail", acest tip de cancer afectează în jur de 35.000 de bărbaţi, iar alţi 10.000 mor anual, numai în Marea Britanie.
În acelaşi timp, femeile care beau cafea şi-ar putea reduce riscul de a dezvolta cancer de col uterin, arată un studiu realizat de Ministerul Sănătăţii din Japonia. Cercetătorii au monitorizat 54.000 de femei cu vârste cuprinse între 40 şi 69 de ani, pe o perioadă de 15 ani. De-a lungul acestei perioade, 117 dintre femei s-au îmbolnăvit de cancer de col uterin. Persoanele monitorizate au fost împărţite în patru grupuri, în funcţie de cantitatea de cafea consumată. Rezultatele au arătat că femeile ce beau cafea regulat au cu până la 60 la sută mai puţine şanse să dezvolte cancer de col uterin decât cele ce consumă cafea de două ori pe săptămână sau mai puţin. Cancerul de col uterin este una dintre cele mai întâlnite forme de cancer la femei la nivel mondial.
Experţii britanici spun că o doză moderată pe zi de cafea, de
aproximativ 200- 300 de miligrame de cafea pe zi, nu poate face rău
nimănui. Mai mult, băutura reduce stările de anxietate şi cele de
oboseală. Efectul cafelei se simte în cel mult o oră, în funcţie de
masa corporală a fiecărui individ, astfel că o persoană mai slabă
va simţi mult mai repede efectele benefice.

While is too early for physicians to start advising their male patients to take up the habit of regular coffee drinking , data presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference revealed a strong inverse association between coffee consumption and the risk of lethal and advanced prostate cancers.
« Coffee has effects on insulin and glucose metabolism as well as * hormone levels, all of which play a role in prostate cancer.
It was plausible that there may be an association between coffee and prostate cancer », said Kathryn M.Wilson, PhD., an postdoctoral fellow at the Channing Laboratory, Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health.
In a prospective investigation, Wilson and colleagues found that men who drank the most coffee had a 60 percent lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer than men who did not drink any coffee. This is the first study of its kind to look at both overall risk of prostate cancer and risk of localized, advanced and lethal disease.
« Few studies have looked prospectively at this association , and none have looked at coffee and specific prostate cancer outcomes, « said Wilson. « We specifically looked at different types of prostate cancer, such as advanced vs. localized cancers or high –grade vs. low-grade cancers. »
Caffeine is actually not the key factor in this association, according to Wilson. The researchers are unsure which components of the beverage are most important , as coffee contains many biologically active compounds like antioxidants and minerals.

B.« CAN PROSTATE CANCER BE PREVENTED ? » No specific measures are known to prevent the development of prostate cancer. At present, therefore we can hope only to prevent progression of the cancer by making early diagnoses and then attempting to cure the disease.Early diagnoses can be made by screening men for prostate cancer.Screening is done, as mentioned previously, by routine yearly digital rectal examinations beginning at age 40 and the addition of an PSA test begginning at age 50. (PSA =blood test called PROSTATE SPECIFIC ANTIGEN).The purpose of the screening is to detect early, tiny, or even microscopic cancers that are confined to the prostate gland.Early treatment of these malignancies (cancers) can stop the growth , prevent the spread , and possibly cure the cancer.Based on some research in animals and people, certain dietary measures have been suggested to prevent the progression of prostate cancer. For example , low fat diets, particularly avoiding red meats, have been suggested because they are thought to slow down the growth of prostate tumors in a manner not yet known. Soybean products , which work by decreasing the amount of testosterone circulating in the blood , also reportedly can inhibit the growth of prostate tumors. Finaly , other studies show that tomato products (lycopenes), the mineral selenium, and vitamin E might slow the growth of prostate tumors in ways that are not yet understood.
WHAT WILL BE THE FUTURE TREATMENTS FOR PROSTATE CANCER ? The treatment of organ –confined prostate cancer to date has involved cutting out, radiating , or freezing the gland in trying to cure the disease. In more advanced cases, the goal has been to control the cancer for at least some time by using hormonal treatment or chemotherapy.Earlier diagnosis and improved treatment techniques in recent years have certainly led to better results.In addition , other treatments are being sought. For example , microwave treatment of the prostate is being used for BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERTROPHY (BPH) in a minimally invasive (minimal cutting or probing), out patient (outside the hospital) procedure.Studies may soon begin to evaluate this technique as a treatment for prostate cancer.The key to curing prostate cancer , however , ultimately will come from an understanding of the genetic basis of this disease.Genes , which are chemical compounds located on the chromosomes determine the characteristics of individuals.Accordingly, investigators at research centers have focused on identifying and isolating the gene or genes responsible for prostate cancer.For example , studies are being conducted in men who have a family history of prostate cancer to try to uncover the genetic links of the disease. Probabil ca s-a investit prea mult in culturile de cafea si acum producatorii nu-si scot banii. Solutia: cultivatorii mai investesc inca 2-3 sute de milioane de euro intr-o cercetare comandata care sa scoata cafeaua ca fiind cel mai ieftin si mai eficient produs in astfel de boli.
Cazuri de acest fel sunt cunoscute in toata lumea, cu toate astea vanzarile vor creste puternic pana un alt studiu, si mai scump, va spune: eroare regretabila, cafeaua dauneaza grav sanatatii.
